Safety First

The first thing to do when your home floods is to get you, your family, and your pets out of it. This is a dangerous situation to be in, so removing yourself from it is first and foremost. A quick checklist for water damage would be:

  1. Turn off all electrical components in the house. Switch breakers off, unplug appliances, etc. The risk of shock in standing water is very great and very deadly. Gas leaks also become a possibility. If needed, call your utility companies if you need help shutting things off.
  2. Look for structural damage. Water seeps into walls not only destroying drywall on the outside, but damaging supports on the inside. The structural integrity of your building may be compromised.
  3. Contaminated water – flood water maybe a biohazard risk. Keep children and pets out of it. Do not walk through flood water without rubber boots or some sort of shield between you and the water.

Remove As Much Water As Possible

Standing water only causes more damage as it sets. The experts at Disaster Restoration Services will bring in pumps to remove this water. This needs to be done quickly to prevent the growth of mold and other bacteria that can be harmful to your health. Once the water is removed, industrial driers can be brought in to dehumidify the area and cleanup can begin. Make sure all sources of water have been shut off as well.
