You should also replace these batteries every year to ensure they are operating correctly. Other important steps to follow are:

Do not leave portable heaters or candles unattended.
All heating units should be cleaned and in properly working order.
All electrical outlets should have covers.
Cover any exposed wiring.
Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Do not leave a stove unattended.
Clean the lint screen of your dryer. Dryers are responsible for 90% of all appliance fires.
Do nor grill close to your home. Only operate grills in open spaces away from structures.
Practice Your Plan
Make sure your entire family, especially children, know what to do in case of a fire. Teach children about the dangers of a fire, and what the alarms sound like. Have at least 2 exits in your home for everyone in the house. And make sure everyone understands how to stop, drop, and roll, just in case.
