Grilling Safety Tips

The estimation for how many fires are started by grilling each year in the United States is nearly 9,000. Half of all of the injuries caused by grills are thermal burns. What are thermal burns? Thermal burns are injuries caused by excessive heat and contact with hot surfaces. There are certain grilling safety tips you should follow this summer when making your food outdoors. Keep your grill free from grease and place it 10 feet away from all structures. If using a gas grill, check it for leaks and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Don’t turn on your gas with the lid closed and never leave a grill unattended while cooking.

Do’s And Don’ts of Grilling

Some things may seem like common sense while others you might not even think of. It never hurts to have a safety plan and make sure your family knows what it is.

Things to DO while grilling:
  • Stay at least 10 feet from your home and over head structures like porches or garages. Avoid trees and brush that may ignite.
  • Clean your grill after every use. Remove any debris from the grill and empty grease traps.
  • Regularly inspect for leaks. Spray a water and soap solution around the propane tank and hoses and look for bubbling. Make repairs as necessary.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a flare up.
  • Allow coals to cool before safely disposing of them in a metal can.
  • Check fire regulations if you are grilling while camping. Conditions in certain places may not allow for grilling.
Now what are some things you should NOT DO while grilling?

  • DO NOT allow children or pets around the grilling area.
  • NEVER turn the gas on with the lid closed. Trapped gas can ignite resulting in a fireball when you open it.
  • DO NOT leave a grill unattended.
  • NEVER grill indoors. Not only is this a huge fire hazard, but can also lead to serious carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • DON’T cook too much food at once. The excess fat from the food can cause a large fire that spreads quickly and is difficult to put out.
